"Life's most persistent and urgent question is, 'What are you doing for others?'' -The Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. This portrait of a Port Authority of New York and New Jersey’s toll collector training class was taken in September 1964, just two months after President Lyndon Baines Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act of 1964 into law, with Dr. King looking over his shoulder. . On the day Dr. King was shot, less than four years later, my mother (front row, third from right), then a single working mother of three single-digit-aged children, would work a double shift in the lanes at the Holland Tunnel to fill in for her colleagues, who had become so distraught upon hearing the news of Dr. King’s death that they needed to go home. Later that week, our mother would tell us about the riots that were breaking out in her colleagues’ neighborhoods, and of their sadness and fear. . I just pulled the photograph out of its paper folder and realized for the first time that my mother had written the names of all of these remarkable women on the back, in alpha order (not by row, unfortunately). I wish I had a way of sharing this memory with their families. They all had dreams, and I hope they all came true. . Some things stay the same, decade to decade, generation to generation. ✨ . My aunt Robin, sleeping, circa 1961. She was probably 1 years old at the time. . My father was born one hundred years ago, on January 7th. Here he is with his mother and one year old brother. Dad was born on his only sister's tenth birthday. Her response to this little birthday present (and she called him that for all of her long and loving life) was a dismayed, "Another brother!" Your story started before you. The story arc carries love and loss, with light leading the way. ✨💕 . My mother, Eleanor. I imagine she was 25, already a mom with 3 daughters. She had three more children years later, including my brother Tommy, who died at the age of three from Leukemia. How did she recover from such grief? I don’t remember...She often baked a cake for him on his birthday, and invited the family over. On what would have been Tommy’s 47th birthday, my mother died. December 12, 2006.
